Settling in under the Saint-Brieuc sun

  Wednesday, June 18th, 5:30pm

Bonjour les familles américaines !

The past four days since I last posted here have been intense and full of discoveries, but students are settling in nicely!

On Sunday, a trip to the beach was organized and all the students attended. Those whose families couldn't make it were picked up by other host parents to make sure everyone could enjoy the sun and warm weather. We had a picnic on the beach and students played volleyball, soccer, cards, and some even went for a swim despite the water being quite cold. Others just relaxed and enjoyed the sun. Here are some pictures of the day:

On Monday, after a morning of classes, students enjoyed lunch at the school cafeteria. Every day they get a starter (usually a choice of salad, some deli meat, fruit, etc.), a main, a dairy product (cheese or yogurt), a dessert (pastry, piece of cake, fruit, chocolate mousse, etc.), as well as bread and water. A few pictures of Monday's lunch:

After lunch, we met in our Support & Success groups, in which we discussed goals and expectations for the program, as well as answering some of the questions students had from their first few days in Saint-Brieuc. We finished the school day with time for physical exercise. Volleyball was once again very popular, but some also organized a soccer match. Other students played basketball or chose to walk around the lycée to get some steps in! Finally, towards the end Océane led a yoga session that about half of the group participated in. Here are a few pictures:

On Tuesday, after classes and lunch, we had our first internet time. Students' smartphones were unlocked and I've never heard the group be so quiet! All of a sudden, everyone was in their own bubble catching up with the outside world.

The rest of the afternoon was spent preparing for the farewell show and the magazine. Some students had ideas of what their contributions would be straight away, while others are still brainstorming what they could do. In any case, the first ideas are very promising and I think we will get a fantastic show and a beautiful magazine!

Today, after classes and lunch, we had our first community engagement. The high school that is hosting us is a Lycée Professionnel, which is a type of high school that prepares students for specific careers, including ones such as healthcare or event planning. High schoolers in the organization and entertainment course organized an afternoon of activities for our students. They were placed into four groups and participated in a number of activities including palet breton (a regional game of accuracy), an obstacle course, a puzzle, and dancing among others. Our students decided to show local high schoolers a few steps of line dancing to the tune of Cotton-Eyed Joe (an instrumental version without lyrics) and everyone danced together. Finally, some cake, biscuits, soda, and iced tea were ready for us to end the afternoon. It was a very nice afternoon of cultural exchange and our students got to spend some time with French teenagers and discuss both the US and France.

On Friday, we will have our first excursion to le Mont-Saint-Michel and Fougères! A heat wave is forecasted so we will bring bottles of water, hats, and sunscreen.
